Once seen as the future of aviation, the largest aircraft in the world lost its appeal to airlines. The trouble with the Airbus A380 was that it was only profitable on high-density routes, but its four Rolls-Royce Trent 900 or the General Electric / Pratt & Whitney Engine Alliance GP7200 burnt more fuel than large twin-engine planes like the Boeing 777.
