Kazakhstan registers rail freight growth in all directions

Kazakh rail freight volumes in the directions of China and Uzbekistan reached significantly higher levels throughout 2023 as compared to 2022. Moreover, rail freight in the direction of Russia grew by 3,2 per cent. The positive developments are attributable to the coordination of the involved parties, according to Kazakh Railways.
Export to Russia grew by 1,1 million tonnes, reaching a total volume of 34,6 million tonnes in 2023. The majority of that number, 20,3 million tonnes, consists of coal exports. Slightly less than half of coal exports to Russia were transit volumes destined for third countries. Other goods transported to Russia include chemicals, petroleum products and grain, which make up 4,5 million tonnes, 1,7 million tonnes and 1 million tonnes respectively.

Growth brings capacity expansion

Rail freight volumes to China saw significant growth, amounting to 35 per cent in comparison to 2022. The total volume reached 12,7 million tonnes. Growth is particularly attributed to the export of grain, non-ferrous metals and petroleum products.

Additionally, Kazakhstan grew their exports to its southern neighbour Uzbekistan by 29 per cent, reaching 10 million tonnes in 2023. The export of coal nearly doubled, reaching 3,1 million tonnes. Other significant export products include petroleum products, chemicals, mineral fertilisers and ferrous metals. In order to combat congestion at border crossings, Kazakhstan has been building new railways and border crossings on the borders of both Uzbekistan and China.
