CSX Transportation is detouring traffic north and south of the Port of Baltimore following the March 26 collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
The busy East Coast port was shuttered when the container ship MV Dali lost power and slammed into the interstate bridge. The main span collapsed moments after, killing six people. While the U.S. Coast Guard has been working on opening an alternative channel, that will mostly be for the cleanup effort — at least initially.
In order to keep traffic moving, shipping companies have begun to use alternative ports, including the Port of New York and New Jersey. As a result, CSX is now moving containers from New York south to their original destination in Baltimore and vice-versa. The railroad has also begun to divert coal trains original destined to the Port of Baltimore south to Newport News, Va.
“While the timeline for resuming freight operations at the Port of Baltimore remains uncertain, we are in constant communication with our customers, providing timely updates on the status of their shipments. CSX is fully dedicated to meeting our customers’ transportation needs during this challenging period,” railroad officials said.
