In the 1950s and 1960s, theUnited States Air Force (USAF)and the US Navy sought to replace their aging fleet of first-generation jets. According to YouTube historian Simon Whistler on the channelMegaprojects, at the time, the Navy needed a long-range interceptor to protect the fleet from enemies, and the Air Force needed a jet capable of performing fighting duties, bombing, and aerial surveillance.
