The completion of an ambitious light rail scheme touted by the Queensland government as a key Olympic legacy project is at risk amid a massive cost blowout.
The state government released the full business case this afternoon after 9News revealed the plans had been completed last year.
The business case estimated the Gold Coast light rail would cost more than $7 billion.
The revelation comes just weeks after Premier Steven Miles scrapped a $2.7 billion scheme to rebuild the Gabba, saying the cost was too much in the midst of a cost of living crisis.
It comes after 9News revealed stage four of the project – a 13-kilometre section of light rail linking Coolangatta to Burleigh – would cost more than $3 billion.
Queensland’s Transport Minister Bart Mellish has admitted the scheme is projected to cost anywhere from $3.1 billion to $7.5 billion.
