World’s Airlines Continue To Navigate Route Disruption From Iran-Israel Conflict

Once again, conflict between nation-states (as opposed to non-state actors) flared up dramatically in the Middle East. On the night of the 13th of April, the Islamic Republic of Iran fired hundreds of missiles and attack drones at the state of Israel. A conflict of this sort poses a very hazardous environment for airlines, leading airlines to route their flights around the conflict zone. The tragic pro-Russian shootdown of MH 17 by a Buk missile over Ukraine in 2014 and the Iranian shootdown of Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 in 2020 demonstrate the danger of flying over active war zones involving air defense. The successful interception of reportedly 99% of Iran's missiles and drones by the US, UK, France, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Israel was widely praised. However, it has still caused chaos in the aviation industry.
