JR Central to introduce private compartments

CENTRAL Japan Railway (JR Central) is to introduce private compartments on its Tokaido Shinkansen high-speed trains. From 2026 onwards passengers will be able to book individual compartments that seat one person.

The compartments will provide even higher-quality facilities and a more comfortable environment for business travellers than the Green or first class cars that are already a feature of Shinkansen trains. Two private compartments will be added to each series N700S train.

The compartments will feature reclining seats with leg rests, Wi-Fi, and individual controls for lighting, air-conditioning and multimedia. JR Central expects the compartments to be popular with passengers wanting to hold online meetings while travelling or individuals requiring extra privacy.

The railways adds that it is reviewing all seating configurations within its Shinkansen fleet.
