Record community response helping shape SRL East neighbourhoods

Thank you to the thousands of Victorians who shared their feedback on the future of the neighbourhoods around Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) stations – helping to shape these communities for the decades ahead.

The Draft Precinct Visions were released in December, outlining the opportunities for more housing choice, increased economic activity and open spaces in the areas around the 6 new SRL East stations. This followed the release of the SRL Discussion Paper for local feedback in August 2023.

Our interactive online survey was visited more than 33,000 times and the Draft Visions downloaded more than 6800 times, with more than 3400 responses received. In addition, we’ve had hundreds of conversations with locals at community events and information sessions.

More than 80% of those surveyed support greener streets in Monash, expanding the health precinct in Clayton, connecting central Glen Waverley to existing cycling and walking paths, and enhancing the natural features of Gardiners Creek in Burwood. There was also strong support for improving connectivity across Box Hill and Cheltenham.

By the 2050s, Melbourne is expected to be a city of around 9 million people – the size of London today. SRL will not only transform our city’s public transport network – it will help shape how Melbourne grows in the future, delivering more diverse and affordable homes and job opportunities close to the new train stations.

There will be further opportunities to have a say in the coming months as the structure planning process continues. Community Panels have also been established for each SRL precinct, as well as an overarching Youth Panel, to provide a forum for more in-depth planning conversations.

SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill will deliver 26 kilometres of twin tunnels and 6 new underground stations at Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill, with trains taking passengers by 2035.

Works are underway this year at every station site. Crews are building tunnel access structures at Burwood and the stabling facility in Heatherton, constructing a temporary bridge in Box Hill to allow traffic to continue flowing on Whitehorse Road while we build SRL East, and moving underground services to make way for the stations and tunnels.

Construction of SRL East is creating up to 8000 direct jobs, with 1200 people already working on the project.
