Hedgerow to boost biodiversity at newly renovated Great Malvern station

Network Rail and its contractor, Murphy, have planted a hedgerow at the newly renovated Great Malvern railway station in an effort to boost biodiversity and support the environment.

The team cleared an area of land at the end of platform 1 to make way for recently completed improvements to the Grade II listed station. This work involved roof and gutter replacements, structural strengthening and the repainting of the ornate ironwork on both of the station’s platform canopies.

Now that the renovation project has been completed, Network Rail and Murphy have begun work to improve the appearance of the empty ground where the vegetation has been removed.

The team have planted nearly 80 native-species shrubs including Blackthorn, Hawthorn, Dog-rose and Hazel, just in time for #WorldEarthDay. Once established, the new hedgerow will contribute to positive biodiversity and act as a natural barrier between the area at the end of platform 1 and the track.
