PKP Cargo confirms Ukraine as target for expansion

PKP Cargo is planning to expand its operations into Ukraine as the company seeks to expand operations in more neighbouring countries. A move into Ukraine would take place after the construction of new infrastructure, according to PKP Cargo’s CEO Alan Beroud.
PKP Cargo, a subsidiary of the state-owned Polish rail operator, plans to move into Ukraine. The company is waiting for new infrastructure in Ukraine to be built first, after which PKP Cargo will make its move.

Currently, American companies are building transshipment terminals in Ukraine. Upon completion, PKP Cargo intends to apply for contracts to operate the terminals.

Ukraine is also building new European-gauge railway infrastructure between Lviv and the Polish border, with plans to extend the network to other places around the country, such as Odesa, at a later stage. The construction of European-gauge rail infrastructure would allow PKP Cargo to operate in Ukraine without purchasing new broad-gauge rolling stock.

International expansion

Halina Bajczuk, director of commercial office-international and intermodal transport market at PKP Cargo, recently stated to RailFreight.com that PKP Cargo was indeed on the lookout to expand operations in more neighbouring countries. Despite the Baltics not being the core focus, Ukraine was not excluded from the equation, considering also that PKP works closely with Ukrainian shippers. Apart from Ukraine, PKP Cargo also operates in Czechia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary.
