AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft are extremely rare, expensive, and valuable. They are the eyes and ears of the battlefield, operating far behind the lines, out of reach of the enemy, where they create a picture of the battlefield. The information gathered by these spy planes is invaluable to increasing the effectiveness of other aspects of a country’s military, such as its fighter jets. Losing even just one AWACS can be painful. Russia has lost over 100 fixed-wing aircraft in this war so far, but how many valuable AWACS planes has Russia lost?
