The early days of aviation were a period of great innovation. After World War I, the postal service drove the aviation industry and helped to develop the passenger airline market. The Boeing Model 40 was built to be a pioneering interwar mail plane, but it was also the first aircraft built by Boeing able to carry passengers. For a time, Boeing operated its own airliner business.
