Arden Station has partnered with CSIRO to test its emergency fire safety systems, to ensure they are ready for the station to open in 2025 as part of the Sunbury to Cranbourne/Pakenham line.
The team used a fog machine to generate ‘hot smoke’ with controlled flames, to safely simulate how smoke behaves in the station.
One test took place within the concourse area, and the other on the platform. Both tests measured smoke movement, speed, extraction time and impact on emergency access points.
These tests aim to ensure Arden Station’s ventilation systems are working as expected to help keep people safe in the rare event of a fire.
Similar tests will be carried out across all Metro Tunnel stations in coming months, ensuring the safety and preparedness of the stations when the Metro Tunnel opens in 2025.
