Rail rolling stock leasing company Ermewa will deploy 200 new wagons in Spain in 2024. Its Spanish subsidiary, Ermewa Ibérica, received a grant of 17,3 million euros from the Spanish Ministry of Transport to finance this project.
The wagons will be of two types: 150 Shimmns and 50 pocket wagons. The wagons will be initially equipped to run on Iberian gauge, but can be adapted for standard gauge, as a spokesperson from Ermewa told RailFreight.com. The company explained that the funds come from the NextGeneration EU fund.
Shimmns and pocket wagons
The Shimmns wagons will be produced in France by manufacturer Inveho at their facility in Orval. The pocket wagons, on the other hand, will be built by Spanish company Talleres Alegría. Shimmns wagons are mostly used for the transport of weather-sensitive cargo and heavy loads, such as steel wire coils. Pocket wagons are instead designed for the transportation of semi-trailers on the railways.
