Cave Hill Road designs released

The final designs for the Cave Hill Road, Lilydale pedestrian underpass have been released, following the closure of the level crossing earlier this year.

The fully accessible underpass will provide a safe connection under the rail line to Lilydale High School and nearby homes and businesses.

The concrete facade at both entries features brightly-coloured geometric patterns designed for safety and durability. The 5m wide underpass will also feature extensive lighting and a ramp, as well as stairs.

A turning circle on Melba Avenue outside Lilydale High School has also been incorporated into the final design to improve safety for school drop-offs and pick-ups.

The Cave Hill Road pedestrian crossing will close from Friday 24 May to enable works to build the new underpass, which will open by spring. During this time, pedestrians can cross the rail line at John Street to access Lilydale High School and Hutchinson Street or Melba Avenue.

The Cave Hill Road level crossing closed in January, and 24/7 works to remove the final 2 sets of boom gates from the Lilydale Line will start from Friday 24 May, with both the Dublin Road, Ringwood East and Coolstore Road, Croydon level crossings gone for good by early July, a year ahead of schedule.

The Lilydale Line, Melbourne’s second busiest, will be the first rail line to be level crossing free.
