Ukrainian Railways (UZ) has exported 30,4 million tonnes of goods between January and April 2024. This is 48,8 per cent more than during the same period last year. PKP LHS, operating between Poland and Ukraine, shows a similar trend.
“In 2024, one of our priorities is to increase the volume of cargo transportation, in particular exports, which are extremely important for the state’s economy. Despite the fact that the enemy intensified its attacks on the railway infrastructure, we have a record number of transported goods for export. The work of each railway worker, which helped to obtain this result, is an important contribution to the stability of our state,” said Yehven Lyashchneko, CEO of UZ.
More than anything, UZ exported grain at 12,9 million tonnes during the first months of 2024. It was followed by iron and manganese ore at 12,5 million tonnes. UZ also exported ferrous metals (1,6 million tonnes) and construction materials (867 thousand tonnes).
PKP LHS shows similar trend
In April, PKP LHS reported that it transported a record freight volume between Poland and Ukraine in the first quarter of 2024. The Polish rail operator operates on the broad-gauge railway that connects Poland and Ukraine. The freight volume it transported between the two countries in the first yearly quarter grew by 5,2 per cent, growing to a record 2,9 million tonnes. Exports through the Izov-Hrubieszów border crossing grew by 141 per cent. Earlier, Ukraine reported a growth of iron ore exports through that border crossing by 43 per cent.
