The locomotives will be capable of 160-200km/h operation and will be used by CFR-Călători to haul 16-car passenger trains operated under three public service obligation (PSO) contracts on the following lines:
Dej – Brașov – Bucharest – Constanța
Timișoara – Arad – Brașov – Bucharest – Constanța
Timisoara – Cluj-Napoca – Iasi, and
Iasi/Suceava – Bucharest – Constanța.
Alstom will also provide maintenance and service the locomotives for 20 years. The total value of the contract is Lei 767.5m ($US 168m). It includes an option to extend the maintenance element for a further 20 years.
The project is being financed through the European Union (EU)-supported National Recovery and Resilience Plan and from the budget of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.
Alstom was the sole participant in the tender. The contract is set to be signed provided there are no objections during a 10-day standstill period.
