Passengers at Birmingham Moor Street station are benefitting from the addition of seven new ticket gates to help reduce congestion and make journeys easier travelling to and from the city’s second busiest station.
The new ticket gates opened to passengers this week after a six-month project to double the number on the main concourse, as well as building two new gates on platform 1.
The upgrade which is part of a £1.8m investment includes the installation of more wide aisle gates for customers with disabilities, luggage or pushchairs. The new gate line will improve the management of customer flows during peak times and for major events including the Birmingham Christmas Markets.
Network Rail has worked closely with partners at Chiltern Railways to minimise disruption to passengers whilst the improvements were rolled out across the Grade II listed station.
The upgrade will also support Chiltern Railways’ ‘Fares Fare’ campaign. With over £400k recovered in lost revenue over the last 12 months, customers are reminded that they should purchase tickets before boarding services into Birmingham Moor Street or face a penalty fare of £100.
Lisa Mack, Area Manager for the West Midlands at Chiltern Railways, said: “I am delighted that we have now opened the long awaited gate-line extension at Birmingham Moor Street. This will support our frontline teams to manage customer flows during peak times and at the weekends which have become busier in recent years.
“The investment will also support future growth across the Chiltern network in the Midlands as we seek to modernise and decarbonise our operations under Chiltern’s 2030 Vision.”
Neil Gaskin, Programme Director for Network Rail’s Central route, said: “This project at Birmingham Moor Street will make a huge difference to passengers travelling through the busy city centre station.
“The additional ticket gates will help to improve journeys by reducing crowding and allowing people to enter and exit the station more quickly.”
