The Boeing 757 continues to play a role in long-haul markets, defined here as covering 2,600 nautical miles (4,815 km) or more. Of course, airlines are choosing the much more fuel-efficient Airbus A321LR and 737 MAX, although they have far higher lease rates than the aging but characterful 757. Inevitably, 757 services have fallen considerably, from 45% of the total in summer 2019 to just 17% now. It is an inevitable technological evolution, as with all equipment.

July 25th, 2024. This was the historic day that Southwest announced the end of ‘open’ seating in exchange for assigned seating. The considerable change, to be operational next year, is about attracting more passengers and benefiting from their additional revenue. Like other carriers, it will also generate significant revenue by enabling passengers to pick particular seats and extra legroom options. While this was understandably the most notable news for the airline, even picked up by mainstream media, it was less publicized that the airlines first overnight flights have been loaded.
