In the late 1990s, Boeing had massive success with its 737 narrowbody aircraft but faced competition from European plane maker Airbus and its A320 family of aircraft. To help give Boeing a competitive advantage, Renton site leaders Carolyn Corvi and Pat Shanahan began formulating a plan to streamline production at Boeing's Renton factory, allowing designers, builders, and support staff to work side by side under the same roof.
