Genesee & Wyoming released two heritage units on Thursday to mark the company’s 125th anniversary.
The locomotives, numbers 1899 (the year the New York short line was founded) and 125, were leading an excursion train Thursday from Rochester to Mount Morris, N.Y., to celebrate the anniversary of the original G&W’s founding. What started as a single operation in western New York now has more than 100 railroads around the globe.
The anniversary units are wearing a modern version of the “whisker stripes” scheme used until the 1970s. The suggestion to paint the units came from an employee.
