On May 9, Ukraine managed to strike the Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat oil refinery around 800 miles from the frontline using kamikaze drones. This puts the vast bulk of European-Russia within striking distance. It demonstrates Ukraine’s growing long-range attack capabilities while forcing Russia to make more and more difficult decisions. It is another reminder of just how far and how fast the drone war in Ukraine has developed from the first chaotic days of the war when a group of 80 drone enthusiasts helped save Kyiv using WhatsApp.
