Jim Chalmers has been slammed as ‘tone deaf’ after his wife Laura turned heads in a $1,900 designer outfit that would cost most Australians a week’s worth of pay.
The former political advisor-turned magazine editor, 40, wore an $899 yellow Carla Zampatti dress and a matching $999 jacket as she supported her husband while he handed down the 2024-25 Budget on Tuesday night.
The power couple shared a sweet kiss at the commencement of his speech with two of their three young children also attending the special night.
However, it wasn’t long before Aussies took offence to Ms Chalmer’s $1,900 outfit with some calling her decision to wear the designer gown as ‘top tier tone deaf’.
The matter was made worse after it re-emerged Dr Chalmers earns more than $420,000 a year as Treasurer.
