In the early noughties, Cessna had a plan to make the most of the new Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) category introduced by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2004. The new category, among other things, enabled pilots to fly without medical certificates, opening personal aviation to a new generation. More important than that, it promised to stimulate uptake at flight schools, and spur the development of new flight training aircraft.
