Siemens and Bilfinger to maintain Edinburgh’s light rail line for 11 more years

OPERATOR Edinburgh Trams has awarded a consortium of Siemens Mobility and Bilfinger UK a £44.7m extension to their contract to maintain the infrastructure of the 18.5km light rail line running from Edinburgh Airport to Newhaven via the city centre.

The extension runs for a term of 11 years. In addition to track, it covers the maintenance of the overhead electrification system, signalling and the network’s supervisory control and data acquisition (Scada) system.

Siemens Mobility has undertaken infrastructure maintenance for Edinburgh Trams since 2014, and was involved in the project to build the final 4.6km section to Newhaven, which opened on June 7 2023.

The contract extension will continue to support some 22 Edinburgh-based jobs at Siemens Mobility, which expects to create some new roles, including additional technicians and apprenticeships.

“We have operated in close collaboration with Edinburgh Trams including the network extension, and we are delighted to be partnering with them for another 11 years,” says Mr Sambit Banerjee, joint CEO of Siemens Mobility UK.

“This is a real testament to the team who have worked so hard over the last 10 years to offer the best service to maintain the Tram infrastructure in Edinburgh.”

“For the past decade, we have worked closely with Siemens Mobility to deliver a world-class service to our growing number of customers,” says Edinburgh Trams managing director, Mr Lea Harrison.

“This continued partnership will be vital as we build on our undoubted success to date.”
