Engineering Equality: The Critical Role of Women in Rail Innovation

Making it in the rail and transport industry as a woman requires resilience, determination, and a strategic approach to navigating the challenges of a traditionally male-dominated field. From the moment we step onto the platform, we are met with scepticism and scrutiny. Our presence is questioned, our abilities doubted, and our voices sometimes silenced. Yet, despite the obstacles, we persevere, driven by a passion for innovation, a commitment to excellence, and a belief in the transformative power of diversity.

In 2024, it remains concerning that questions such as, “How did you manage to enter the rail industry?” persist. As women actively engaged in the rail sector, it is incumbent upon us to pave the way for future generations so that their presence within this domain is not regarded as exceptional or rare. As the Zulu saying goes “Lugotshwa lusemanzi”, it is important for a girl child to know that engineering is not exclusive to boys; it’s a field open to all.

Encouraging girls to explore engineering not only promotes gender equality but also ensures diverse perspectives and solutions in tackling complex problems. By breaking down gender stereotypes, we create an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive and contribute their unique talents to shaping our world. Empowering girls to pursue their interests in engineering fosters innovation, strengthens communities, and paves the way for a more equitable future. Ultimately, emphasizing that engineering is not gender-specific opens doors to endless possibilities and reinforces the principle that passion and capability transcend gender boundaries.

I firmly believe that every entity, particularly educational institutions and corporations, holds a significant role in shaping a future world where gender no longer dictates an individual’s career choices in transport or any engineering discipline. We need to see women not just in administrative positions but leading the engineering departments within the rail industry. I believe that the benefits of having women at the helm of rail and transport will extend far beyond the confines of the industry itself.
