The boom gates at Brunt Road in Beaconsfield have been removed following the opening of the new Brunt Road bridge in April 2024 – a year ahead of schedule.
While the Pakenham Line is closed until Monday 3 June, crews worked to remove the boom gates and redundant rail infrastructure from beneath the new road bridge.
With traffic flowing over the new road bridge, journeys are improved for the 8400 drivers passing through each day and the Pakenham Line is one step closer to being level crossing-free by 2025 – allowing more trains to run when the Metro Tunnel opens in 2025.
New paths across the bridge provide a safer and more direct link to local schools, shops and services on either side of the rail line.
The team will continue to work in the area, including completing landscaping and planting of more than 50,000 plants, shrubs and grasses.
The boom gates have also been removed and the road permanently closed at the Station Street, Officer level crossing. With the boom gates gone for good, so too is the risk of incidents between cars and trains.
Vehicles can cross the rail line via the new Brunt Road bridge or Siding Avenue underpass.
Further down the Pakenham Line, works are continuing on 3 level crossing removals at Main Street, McGregor Road and Racecourse Road, and two new stations at Pakenham and East Pakenham, set to open on Monday 3 June.
Across Melbourne, 77 level crossings have been removed, with 110 to go by 2030, boosting safety and easing congestion.
