The eight piers that will support the new Fyans Street rail bridge have been installed, as work continues on construction of the bridge structure that will replace the roundabout and level crossing.
The central steel bridge span is taking shape at a temporary site near the level crossing, one of three pieces that will form the rail bridge over Fyans Street.
The 400 tonne steel girders – that arrived in sections from Tasmania in March – have been connected by 27 smaller cross girders that form the base of the bridge.
In recent weeks 114 precast concrete panels that form the floor of the steel girder bridge have been installed, with each panel weighing nearly one tonne.
The central steel bridge will be flanked by two super T bridges that will raise the rail over the realigned Fyans Street intersection once the roundabout and level crossing are removed for good later this year.
The concrete deck of the bridges have now been poured, with work progressing on access walkways and kerbs before the full bridge is moved into place.
A new rail bridge will replace the Fyans Street level crossing, simplifying the five-way intersection.
Extending Fyans Street to Breakwater Road will improve traffic flow for the more than 17,000 vehicles that use the intersection each day.
The level crossing and roundabout removal will allow for improvements along Carr Street. These include a new landscaped walking and cycling path connecting to the Bellarine Rail Trail as well as new public open space under and adjacent to the new bridge.
