The Healesville railway line, in Melbourne, Australia, was the non-electrified continuation of the suburban Lilydale line, extending into the Yarra Valley. The line closed in the 1980s, but a heritage railway group, the Yarra Valley Railway, is working to retain part of the line between Yarra Glen and Healesville.
Travel with the train driver as we travel from Healesville station to the Tunnel on the Yarra Valley Tourist railway. This is as far as the train can travel at the moment as the track further on is undergoing a major rebuild.
Sadly another outer Melbourne line closed and removed wiping out transport options for Melbourne’s growing outer East. This line was also closed by the Victorian Labor Party.
The line itself passed through the very popular Yarra Valley Victoria’s version of the Barossa Valley. If retained and the line would have provided much needed access to the city from a growing regional and area and would also have allowed Melbourne based tourists to easily access the region without a vehicle.
Is it time a metro service ran back to Yarra Glen? Lillydale is too congested with commuters driving into Lillydale for day trips to Melbourne. There is no way to offer rail services east and that is stupid.
