Prototype Information
Designed with one eye on the export market, the 50 Class 58s were the last diesel locomotives built by British Rail. For much of their life, they were employed on intensive diagrams ferrying coal between Midlands collieries and power stations alongside the Class 56s.
From the mid-1990s, their range of duties expanded and they were largely focused in the south-east of England for Mainline and later EWS. Replaced by Class 66s in the late-1990s and early-2000s, many were exported to France, Spain and, briefly, the Netherlands.
