White Pass & Yukon 73 to Return to Service This Summer

By Railfan & Railroad Staff

White Pass & Yukon 2-8-2 73 will lead regular excursions between Skagway, Alaska and Lake Bennett, B.C., from June until September.

It’s the first time in a number of years that the 2-8-2 locomotive has led regular excursions on the narrow gauge railroad. The five-hour trips will occur on Fridays and Sundays beginning June 7 and going until September 13.

The locomotive was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in May 1947. It was retired in 1964 and then put on display until the 1980s when it was restored to service. It has led excursions ever since. In the late 2010s, the locomotive was rebuilt but it didn’t run much prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
