Everything you need to know about Sydney’s upcoming metro fast-rail system

Sydney is on the brink of a transformative upgrade in its transportation network with the development of the new Sydney Metro fast underground rail system. This project promises not just new trains but also new station locations, significantly reducing travel times across various parts of Sydney. It is the kind of advancement the city has been eagerly anticipating.

The Sydney Metro, currently under construction beneath the city, is set to feature high-speed, driverless trains that will revolutionize commuting by making it faster and more convenient. A major milestone has already been achieved, with all 45 metro trains in the fleet having completed at least one return journey between Tallawong and Sydenham at operational speeds.

The new metro will dramatically enhance travel ease and speed for Sydneysiders. For instance, the journey from North Sydney’s new Victoria Cross Station under the harbour to Barangaroo will take just three minutes. Other key stops on the metro line include Castle Hill, Macquarie University, and a significant superhub in the CBD at Martin Place.

Frequent and ultra-fast services are set to simplify commuting throughout Sydney. Although construction has caused disruptions, particularly for those on the Bankstown to Sydenham line, the benefits are expected to outweigh the inconveniences. The first stage of the Sydney Metro, known as Sydney Metro Northwest, opened in May 2019, connecting Chatswood to Rouse Hill’s Tallawong Station.

The current focus is on completing the Sydney Metro City and Southwest line, a 30-kilometre stretch running from Chatswood to Bankstown. This line is scheduled to open in mid-2024, with a major station beneath Martin Place serving as a central hub.

The estimated journey times for the Sydney Metro are impressive:

  • Castle Hill to Martin Place in 35 minutes
  • Macquarie University to Central in 26 minutes
  • Chatswood to Gadigal in 13 minutes
  • North Sydney’s Victoria Cross to Barangaroo in 3 minutes
  • Central to Martin Place in 4 minutes
  • Central to Sydenham in 7 minutes
  • Sydenham to Chatswood in 22 minutes

The Sydney Metro City & Southwest line will traverse from Chatswood to Bankstown, passing through the city and beneath the harbour. The completion of this line will lead to the temporary closure of the Bankstown to Sydenham train line for 12 months, impacting commuters but promising long-term benefits.

In significant news for Sydney’s western suburbs, the government has confirmed that Sydney Metro West will proceed, with a completion date projected for 2032. This line will connect Sydney CBD to the new city center near Sydney’s new airport, with plans to develop additional affordable housing along the route.

Transport Minister Jo Haylen highlighted the benefits, stating, “From the middle of this year, our city will be served by six brand new metro stations, giving commuters more travel options than ever before.”

The Sydney Metro is set to open in mid-2024, marking a significant step forward in the city’s transportation infrastructure.
