Ukrainian Railways (UZ) has achieved year-on-year success by growing its freight transportation by 30 per cent. The growth concerns freight volumes in the period of January to May. At 57 per cent, export volumes grew even more.
The total transported volume of freight in the first five months of 2024 amounted to 75,4 million tonnes. This is a growth of 30 per cent when compared to 2023. Export volumes amounted to 38 million tonnes, which is 57 per cent higher than the year prior.
“We ensure stable work and fully transport commercial cargo. According to the results of 5 months, we have quite significant indicators both in the total volume of transportation and in the strategic export connection for the country. In particular, grain exports increased by 39 per cent compared to last year. We are ready to continue contributing to the country’s economy and business needs in transportation,” Evhen Lyashchenko, CEO of UZ said.
Export traffic leads
Export traffic took the largest share of UZ’s transport volumes at 38 million tonnes, which is followed by domestic traffic at 32,9 million tonnes. UZ imported 4,3 million tonnes of goods in the first five months of 2024.
Iron and manganese ore were the largest contributors to transport volumes at 19,3 million tonnes. UZ transported 18,8 million tonnes of cargo, 11,5 million tonnes of hard coal and 10,8 million tonnes of construction materials.
