Airline passengers have been warned of a return to strict limits of just 100ml of liquid in hand luggage due to security check concerns.
The revelation has dealt a blow to hopes that people would no longer face the restrictions before boarding flights in the UK, thanks to 3D scanners being installed at airports across the UK.
Teesside, Newcastle, Birmingham and London City airports had scrapped the requirement for travellers to remove laptops, tablets and liquids from their hand luggage. Travellers were until recently told they would be able to take up to two litres of liquid through security, instead of a maximum of one litre split across 100ml containers.
In an about-turn, however, no airports in the UK are allowing passengers to travel abroad with any liquid container with a capacity greater than 100ml.
Officials told The Daily Telegraph that the return to limited liquids was “temporary” and the decision was not made in relation to any specific threat.
The Department for Transport said: “From 0001 on Sunday June 9, 2024, 100ml restrictions on liquids will temporarily be reintroduced for passengers travelling from six regional airports where Next Generation Security Checkpoints (NGSC) are in full operation.
