The Hamilton-Auckland Te Huia train service’s future could be far from certain under a National-led Government, the party’s transport spokesperson Simeon Brown has indicated.
Te Huia was launched in 2021 on a five-year trial basis and is currently facing a two-year review. Delivery of Te Huia is led by Waikato Regional Council, working with KiwiRail, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, Hamilton City Council, Waikato District Council, Auckland Transport and the Ministry of Transport.
The service has faced a range of problems including low (but now improved) patronage, Covid-19 disruptions and being temporarily banned from Auckland’s Strand station recently after going through red lights.
