The Eastern Adriatic Sea Port Authority, which manages Italy’s largest port in Trieste, was awarded the status of rail infrastructure manager from the National Agency for Railway and Road Infrastructure Safety (ANSFISA). With the new certification, which is a first-of-its-kind for an Italian port, the Authority can now manage the infrastructure of the whole facility.
The status of infrastructure manager was assigned also in lieu of the more than 12,000 freight trains handled by the port in 2023. More specifically, about 54 per cent of the containers passing through the port travel on the railways. Moreover, the Port Authority established a dedicated body focussing on rail infrastructure.
With this new development, the Port Authority can now take over from the national infrastructure manager Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) the various infrastructural upgrades needed. Back in September 2022, some of these projects had to be postponed by RFI due to increasing raw material costs and some hurdles in following ANSFISA’s normative. With the status, the port of Trieste now has to take care of construction, management and maintenance of the railway infrastructure.
