TfW offers support to refugees and asylum seekers

Transport for Wales has launched a new partnership with refugee and asylum seeker charity Oasis to donate equipment and provide employment support.

Oasis is a charity that welcomes people who are seeking sanctuary and provides support to roughly 100-150 visitors each day from around the globe. A range of activities, support and classes are offered to help refugees and asylum seekers to integrate within their local community.

The partnership with Oasis is part of Transport for Wales’ commitment to anti-racism, providing greater career opportunities to under-represented groups, with the aim of diversifying the workforce operating and delivering Wales’ multi-modal transport network.

Marie Daly, Chief Customer and Culture Officer said: “This is a fantastic partnership with a charity which does amazing work to provide essential support services to refugees and asylum seekers, highlighting an under-represented skilled workforce we can support and who can add value to the services we provide.”

According to the Welsh Refugee Council in Cardiff there are over 10,000 refugees, with asylum seekers and refugees making up less than 0.5% of the Welsh population.

James Price, Chief Executive Officer for Transport for Wales added: “This partnership is part of our commitment to deliver on our anti-racism plan and to support under-represented groups to have greater access to employment opportunities.”

As well as providing donations and career opportunities, Transport for Wales will be providing community support through its sustainability team and community teams to provide greater engagement with the clients of Oasis.
