Electrification of Frankston Rail Line towards Mornington Peninsula

As part of the 2023-2024 Federal Budget released on 9 May 2023, an Infrastructure Australia review of all construction projects previously funded but not yet commenced has been commissioned by the Federal Government. This includes the Frankston rail line extension project. Council is awaiting more information on this process.

The proposal to electrify the existing Stony Point diesel rail line from Frankston Station towards the Mornington Peninsula, delivering faster and more reliable metropolitan rail services across the region, has been a long-standing priority for Frankston City Council.

The project will mean people living further up the line or from the Mornington Peninsula will be able to get on a train at Langwarrin or Baxter and commute directly to Monash University, Frankston Hospital and Frankston Private Hospital, Chisholm TAFE or directly into Melbourne.

In May 2018, the Australian Government committed $225 million to deliver the Frankston line extension. Subsequently, a preliminary business case investigating the project was undertaken by the Victorian Government and released in November 2020 and is available here.

Frankston City Council continues to work with the Australian Government and Mornington Peninsula Shire Council on this project.
