The Australian Government is undertaking a 90-day review of its Infrastructure Investment Program, with jointly funded Victorian projects that are not election commitments or under major construction to be included.
Early works on Geelong Fast Rail continue, but no new contracts will be awarded during the review period.
This website will be updated with further information when it is available.
Project Map
Overview
The Werribee corridor has been selected as the route to deliver faster services for Geelong, with new dedicated track between Werribee and Laverton for Geelong trains, cutting average travel times for passengers by up to 15 minutes.
It is not clear any work has been completed on this project or it is still a valid project. Where has the Federal money gone?
Another empty promise from the ALP with no substance?
The easement between Werribee and Laverton has only room for 2 tracks + the freight line with level crossing removals there is not room without bridge rebuilding once again. If the government knew of this project why then was more space not provided for on these big builds?
This is somewhat correct as a new line will be required for the express but are we talking about one or two new lines?
Good point.
Project was funded by federal government but a review became the way forward when many suspect a shorter and importantly diverse service from Melbourne to Geelong and beyond is of benefit.
Freeing up capacity on the RRL for local services and providing express Geelong trains is a good idea but having services both ways is a good forward thinking approach to service provision.
It feels like many rail projects in Victoria become just announcements and very few are delivered.
